The Hoplon is a space fighter that appears in the 1980 arcade game Phoenix. In Xeno Fighters R, the Hoplon's weapons are a divergence from the Gyaraga's weapons, giving the former more coverage while having less firepower, though still high compared to average.

Loadout[]

Laser Weapon[]

Phoenix Blaster: Shoots a single shot forward. Higher levels increase the number of bullets fired at a time and spread out slightly at the highest power levels.

Missile weapon[]

Phoenix Missile: Launches Phoenix projectiles, which home in to enemies and deal damage. Higher power levels increase the number of Phoenixes that are launched at a time. The Phoenix Missile fires much more rapidly than Gyaraga's Bug Missile weapon.

Bomber[]

Phoenix Barrier: Emits a huge shockwave and deploys a shield around Hoplon. It renders the Hoplon invincible for 1 second and the barrier itself can clear bullets and damage enemies. However, it has almost no coverage except in the immediate proximity of the Hoplon, and is neither effective as an offensive weapon nor as a recovery weapon after deaths.

Slaves[]

Phoenix Slaves: Summons Phoenix slaves that assume the standard Raiden Fighters formations.

Development history[]

The Hoplon was once an alternate skin of the Gyaraga. As a skin alt, Gyaraga/Hoplon shared the same Missile and Laser weapons that Gyaraga has currently (with different skins), both had a double ship mode at full Laser power, both used the Phoenix Barrier as a Bomber, and both used the Galaga Tractor Beam as their slave mechanic.

The ship does not have an official name in its original arcade game. A name that was chosen in reference to the ship's Barrier special attack was "Hoplon." A "hoplon" is the name of the set of equipment used by the hoplites, who were Ancient Greek soldiers who were armed with spears and shields, known for using the phalanx formation in battle.
