The Dark Sword (ダークソード daaku soodo) is a Seibu Kaihatsu secret guest fighter. It originally was created for Raiden Fighters 2 as a fast Blue Javelin clone. In Xeno Fighters R, the Dark Sword is overhauled to play similarly to the player ships in Viper Phase 1.
Description[]
Out of the three Viper Phase 1 ships, the Dark Sword is the slowest of them. It uses the two weapons from Viper Phase 1 that were not carried over into the Raiden Fighters games: the "W" weapon (here called "Viper Vulcan") and the "L" weapon (here called "Viper Beam"). Additionally, the Dark Sword is a M/L type fighter; it switches between its Missile and Laser weapons. The Judge Spear and Blue Javelin have their Vulcan Cannons as a separate Laser-type weapon. With the Dark Sword, however, its Vulcan Cannon is a main shot, fired with the active Missile or Laser weapon.
The Dark Sword in Xeno Fighters R plays as a finesse-type fighter. It is most effective if you know when to switch weapons. Both weapons have a high damage output, but both have their weaknesses in certain situations.
All Seibu Kaihatsu guest fighters are not invincible when using their Bomber.
Loadout[]
Missile weapon[]
Viper Vulcan: The "W" wide weapon from Viper Phase 1. At full power, the Dark Sword has an above average coverage of the screen, highly effective against swarms of smaller enemies. The weapon can deal additional damage by point-blanking larger enemies. However, that situation is best handled by...
Laser weapon[]
Viper Beam: The "L" straight laser weapon from Viper Phase 1. A narrow and straight-firing laser that deals extreme amounts of damage on larger enemies, even from a distance. At full power, the Viper Beam melts away boss health like a hot knife through butter. This weapon's biggest weakness is the complete lack of coverage, as the Dark Sword is vulnerable with this weapon in enemy swarms and rushes.
Bomber[]
Dimension Mine: A highly damaging plasma ball that deploys quickly. It is one of the most powerful bombers in the game, deploying quickly enough to cancel out enemy projectiles in a pinch and dealing enough damage to be used offensively.
Slaves[]
Standard Raiden F: This is the standard Slave type used in the Raiden Fighters games.
Unlock requirements[]
On the ship select screen, move to "?", hold down the "D" key on the keyboard, and press Button 1 (Fire).
Trivia[]
- The Dark Sword is the first hidden fighter to be added to the game, added in the v0.298 release.
- The Laser weapon's name "Viper Beam" is the same as the special attack of Cable in Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
