Copper Caoineag (カッパークーニャック kappaa kuunyakku) is the boss of Stage 5-C (End of Days) and the first midboss of Stage F-C (BRES Colony).
Game origins[]
Copper Caoineag is the final boss of the 1995 Seibu Kaihatsu arcade shmup, Viper Phase 1.
The caoineag is a female spirit in Scottish folklore, a highland banshee, whose name means "weeper."
Backstory[]
Stage 5-C (End of Days)[]
BRES was successful in activating the Orion Destabilizer deep under Iceland, causing unprecedented seismic and volcanic activity around the world. The Copper Caoineag reconnaissance and scout craft is deployed to a now devastated Earth to scout for any signs of survivors. As Copper Caoineag surveys the ruins of the Lisbon, Portugal, location of ATHENA's main headquarters, its crew notices a lone ATHENA craft fighting off a smaller recon team. Copper Caoineag is ordered to set a course towards the resistance and gather as much information as possible. With no other option left, the ATHENA survivor engages Copper Caoineag in battle.
Copper Caoineag is ordered to simply stall the ATHENA survivor. Whether it survives or falls to the ATHENA survivor, BRES is rest assured that their victory over ATHENA and the Earth is absolute.
Stage F-C (BRES Colony)[]
BRES is immediately placed on high alert, being made aware that the forces of ATHENA have located their space colony and main headquarters: Tor Inis. With most of their forces destroyed throughout history, BRES is shorthanded. They are forced to deploy an ill-equipped and poorly armored Copper Caoineag against the forces of ATHENA in a desperate attempt to stop them in outer space, before they can breach the colony.
Attack patterns[]
Copper Caoineag has mostly the same attack patterns as its original source game. The three pairs of side turrets shoot one pair at a time on either side, trapping the player between two bullet streams. This leaves the player in a vulnerable position to the support fighters that come in during the boss fight and shoot a fast aimed bullet at the player.
Halfway through the battle, Copper Caoineag's main turret activates and rotates, shooting two sets of double bullets 180 degrees from each other. The turret does two full rotations (720 degrees) before deactivating. After activating again, the turret will rotate in the opposite direction.
Ten seconds before Copper Caoineag leaves the battle, it launches a salvo of up to 112 destructible grenades at the player.
As the 5-C endboss, Copper Caoineag attacks for a total of 50 seconds before it leaves. As the first midboss of Stage F-C, it attacks for a total of 25 seconds. It has about half the health as a midboss than as an endboss.
